- Smaller size is usually 1/700 scale. The larger size models generally are either 1/400 or 1/350 scale. Prices for smaller scale ships are usually around $20 range, and the larger scales go for around $50 - 80, depending on the manufacturer and amount of detail. Revell, Tamiya, and Hasegawa make good kits. Go to Hobbylinc.com to get a good idea of what kits are out there.
- As posted 1/700 and 1/350 - 1/400 for kits. Some additional notes - some older Japanese kits were at 1/450 or 1/500; some large scale models at 1/200. Very old kits tend to be 'box scale' designed to fit in a common box and be about the same size regardless of what the actual scale comes out. One other common scale is 1/600 which modern Airfix kits were made to; also some makers made 1/720 which is very compatible with 1/700. If you are interested in sailing ships that is a different matter - they are often to scales like 1/96. 1/100. 1/192 or smaller. Some are made at 1/350 to fit nicely with modern ships.
