How can i clean 20 years worth of dust from a wooden model ship? My girlfriend has a model ship that her father made before he died. Its mostly made of wood, but also contains rope, and metal (for the cannons and the like) It has accumulated over 20 years worth of dust. I have tried using compressed air on it (like you would for a computer) and it doesn't even budge the dust. How can I clean the ship? what kinda product can i use? Murphy's maybe? is there some special technique to cleaning dust that old?

Stripping Finish From Wooden Ship Model? I've built a model of a Chris-Craft barrel-back cruiser: the wood part turned out just fine, but I don't like the finish. I want to strip it off and start the finish over. I was going to use lacquer thinner, but will this affect the glue? The model is put together with super glue. I know that acetone will dissolve super glue, but what about lacquer thinner? Or is there something better that won't hurt the glue? Thanks for any advice out there!!
Wooden ship model kit - beginners? I want to buy a ship model kit and am unsure where to start- I've heard American manufacturers provide better instructions- any suggestions? I'm crafty but some of these ships look very complex. I'm particuarly interested in ancient ships and am having a tough time finding American manufactures who make them - any suggestions much appreciated - also, if you know of a good beginner book for wooden ship building that would be helpful- thank you!
Where can I buy Wooden Ship model kit? I don't want to spend like $100+ on a model ship kit like the way Hobby Town sells them. I like to assemble the pieces myself because it's fun to build such a thing. I bought one from Target from the toy section, it was a wooden pirate ship for $10 and it was worth every penny. It wasn't really complicated but it was fun. I'm wondering if anybody would know where to buy these Wooden ship model kit (assemble yourself) for like $50 or maybe less. :P. lol, I'm probably pushing the price but it doesn't have to have real oak or whatever. If anyone has been to Target and seen that model pirate ship, then you know what I'm looking for. Where it isn't the best quality in the world but it looks pretty decent/good. A hobby shop (like Hobby Town, as I mentioned ^) are like $100-300. Anywhere cheaper? online or at a store?
Where can I buy a model pirate ship? It doesnt have to be a pirate ship per say. But I would like to buy and build a wooden ship model and was looking for a good site to check out.

how to bend wood? Working on a small wooden ship model. Whats the best procedure for bending planks?
Where would I attain wood blocks for carving? I have several carving instruments already, and I have had plans to carve out a wooden ship model and a small statue, but I'm having trouble finding blocks of wood to actually carve it out of. I've looked at Home Depot, but they mostly sell large wooden planks and lumber, and even if I sawed those into smaller chunks the grain would not be ideal for carving. I'd like the wooden ship model to be large enough to be able to display above my fireplace or something, so the blocks sold on the internet that are like 2"x6"x6" wouldn't do. If anything, I'd like for it to be a cube? Does anyone know where to buy wood blocks like that at a craft store or something? I live in Orange County, California and I would prefer not to buy things online, so names of stores in the area would be great.
Regarding building an old galleon with modified insides and motor? I'm interested in spending the money to have designed and built a ship modeled after an old galleon but with modern features inside, although I want to maintain the wooden outside and the interior to be decorated in a like-looking way with all the nice amenities of the current day. Are there some companies who would do something like this? I understand this would be almost an unfounded estimate but if you had to shoot some numbers out what would you lot estimate the cost to be? Also considering East Indiaman version instead...

Where can I find wooden wagon model kits? My grandma is looking for wagon kits to build something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&item=200599157756&nma=true&rt=nc&si=mS3driScvgTWepzn%252BTNMBcQ90Ac%253D#ht_500wt_1156 Maybe a hobby store or website I could go to. Preferably Allwood brand but it doesn't matter. Not little kid toy models. And preferably not to spend more then $20 (not including shipping).
Sounds implauseable but is real about ship building? Basically dont take this as a joke. I need to find construction companies that can build a tall ship not just any era. The British Empire era times of the HMS Victory. I need to build a sixth grade ship a type of battleship. Like the HMS Rose or HMS Suprise. These are major builds and need serious answers. Bringing history back isnt easy. So a ship builder for huge wooden tallships. Any help? not a model... the real thing Also a bit of fun.... How much would you say this would take? Any currency. If you wonder why I ask on here. Its because I want more than just an industry saying there cheap turning out to be massivley overpriced for exact same services of another industry.

Buying A GOOD QUALITY wooden Viking Longship NOT A MODEL? I am very interested in historical items from the viking era, most noticeably their longships. I have been looking for a snekkja longship for some time, and not just a model, but a top quality viking style longship that is MADE FOR USE, not decoration. However looking online I have only found models, or small 4 seaters that are made in viking image. I want something I could actually sail across the Atlantic in. If anyone knows any companies, or skilled individuals with experience in making such ships, please let me know. I currently am not able to buy one, but want to know of a company/skilled person, who makes these, so I can see what type of work they have and what price they are asking. A typical snekkja might have a length of 17 metres (56 ft), a width of 2.5 metres (8.2 ft), and a draught of only 0.5 metres (1.6 ft). It will carry a crew of around 41 men (40 oarsmen and one cox).
Model Shipbuilding. Where do I start? so I'd like to start building wooden ships but I'm really not sure where to start. I'm wiling to be patient and I'd like to build something of decent quality. I've seen some kits for the uss constitution and I'm not sure if I would be able to just pick up the plans and know what to do, or if I should research the ship before I start or what. What kinds of things should I know before I buy a $200+ model or $50+ plans. what kind of final cost should I expect and how much time will I be spending on it? Thank you for taking the time to read this and answer my questions.
is there a gap in the market..if i have looked for a modern cabin cruiser model for weeks on ebay, but only... found the odd american seller selling an antiquated 50's or 60's style cabin cruiser? i want something around the 12 inch mark...the only models ive seen based in the uk are 3 foot long which is way too big for an ornament. given the amount of people owning or interested in boats in the uk, surely there is a market for replica cabin cruisers of a size around 8 - 12 inches? in these stressed out frenetic times, isnt a boat the ultimate symbol of freedom or carefree existence...and if so, wouldnt lots of people be interested in have a ornament that reminds them of that state of mind. the funny thing is, on ebay i see lots of these tankers yachts tug boats cruise ships hovercraft sailing boats speed boats old style wooden ships with sails... but next to nothing when it comes to cabin cruisers..!
Is making model castles gay? I know most guys build model airplanes, model tanks, model ships, model trains, etcetera. But I've got a collection of model castles I built in our basement, and I'm also fond of building dollhouses. See, when my little sister was growing up, we didn't have the money to buy dollhouses. So my dad (with my help) promised to make her her own dollhouses. And now, I got hooked! I build wooden (not the plastic ones) dollhouses for a hobby! Most guys accuse me of being gay because I build model castles (most of which are fairytale castles. The white wall, blue or pink roof variety) and dollhouses! Is anything wrong with my hobby?!? Most guys reason it is, because they build TANKS, SHIPS, PLANES, while I build FAIRYTALE CASTLES! That's how they accuse me!
Simple physics questions? Guys i really need it,it's a H.W and physics is too hard,i am currently in 8th grade.here are the questions: a)Explain the following observations. i)The mass of a piece of rock measured by means of a beam balance is the same on the Earth and on the Moon. ii)The weight of the same piece of rock measured by means of a spring balance is the same on the Earth and on the Moon. b)Distinguish between mass and inertia.how are they related? A student was traveling on a bus and he was standing in the middle portion of the bus. When the bus driver suddenly jammed on the brakes,a wooden box hit the student's legs.He claimed that the box came form the front portion of the bus.Is his claim true?Explain your answer. 2.The Moon has a mass a sixth of that of the earth's because of that, the gravitational force on the Moon is about a sixth of that on earth. If a person has a mass of 60KG on the earth, how much will he weigh on the Moon? 3.A boy has made a model ship with a mass of 1.1kg and a volume of 900cm3.Will it float on water?[density of water is 100kg m-3.] 4.The SAF operates the M113 ultra APC.This armored vehicle has a mass of 1.115 x 10`4 kg when loaded. But yet is able to float, what can we say about its volume?[density of water is 100kg m-3.] 5. a)Describe how you would measure the density of an irregularly-shaped solid by means of a simple experiment in the laboratory. b)A measuring cylinder contains 100cm3 of water. An irregularly-shaped solid object of mass 70g is lowered into the cylinder .Given that the density of the object is 7.0g cm-3 and that it's completely immersed, calculate the new reading on the measuring cylinder. i want brief answers please with proper explanation!!!

How to scale down a 'doom scenario'? Hi there guys, I'm a first year maritime engineering student and for this weekend I got an assignment with me. Next week our group has to build a small scale replica situation to test out what happens when a ship encounters a ghost fishing line, and they decided I should do the math for scaling it down :( We're planning to build a 1:100 model of the ship and fishing gear, and for our studies it of course is most important to see what happens to the ship. (rather than the fishing lines) Data we got, to use for the ship: size LxWxD (m): 120x20x8 Power: 7200hp rpm: 200 tonnage: 8000GMT trial speed: 17kt The size of the ship is easily scalable, though of course it will not be possible to put a 72 hp engine on this tiny wooden boat, nor will it be able to weigh 80 tons. Of course I could scale both these factors, though in that case I also should scale down the fishing net's strength proportionally, right? In short; how on earth do I scale down this situation as accurately as possible?? Cheers and thanks a lot!
help!! maths 1:700? Ian builds wooden toys. Recently he built a model of a shipping container using a scale of 1:700. The surface area of the toy is 276mm2(square). Determine the surface area of the real container. Give your answer in mm2(square) and in m2(square).

What do you guys think of this excerpt from a book many would consider an American classic? In the book, there is a nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the United States. The main character, Randy, is speaking with his brother Mark (a colonel in the USAF). --"How did it happen?" Randy had asked. "Where did we slip?" "It wasn't a lack of money," Mark had replied. "It was a state of mind. Chevrolet mentalities shying away from a space-ship world. Nations are like people. When they grow old and rich and fat they get conservative. They exhaust their energy trying to keep things the way they are--and that's against nature. Oh, the services were to blame, too. Maybe even SAC (Strategic Air Command). We designed the most beautiful bombers in the world, and built them by the thousands. We improved and modified them each year, like new model cars. We couldn't bear the thought that jet bombers themselves were out of style. Right now we're in the position of the Federal Navy, with its wooden steam frigates, up against the Confederate iron-clad. It is a state of mind that money alone won't cure." "What will?" Randy asked. "Men. Men like John Ericsson to invent a Monitor to face the Merrimac. Bold men, audacious men, tenacious men. Impatient, odd-ball men like Rickover pounding desks for his atomic sub. Ruthless men who will fire the deadheads and ass-kissers. Rude men who will tell the unimaginative, business-as-usual, seven-carbon sons of bitches to go take a jump at the galloping goose. Young men because we've got to be be a young country again. If we get that kind of man we may hack it--if the other sides gives us the time." --Alas, Babylon. By Pat Frank. Do you feel this statement applies again, today? And if so, who are these bold, audacious, tenacious, impatient, impatient, odd-ball, ruthless, rude young men who will tell the unimaginative, business-as-usual, deadhead ass-kissers to go chase a figurative goose so we can get back to being a young country? To eelfins, Barack Obama has actually increased the military budget by 4% from where Bush had it. If Obama is "cutting the military," Bush must have really hated it to have had even less money going to them. That, or you are just misinformed. Rebel Yell, I agree, it is about better competition. So who are the ones who will make us more competitive in the modern world? And don't hesitate to name some Republicans. The excerpt may have said conservative, but I don't think he necessarily meant it in the way Republicans mean it when they say it. I know Republicans aren't for standing still or regressing in progress; they just disagree on what constitutes progress. If there are Republicans that you want to name that you think are one of those men, or women of course, then say so. So...no one, fellas? You guys cannot think of a single person, in any party, that fits the bill? Democrat, Republican, Independent, Libertarian, Constitution, Green, Socialist, Socialist Workers Party of America, Fascist Party of America....not a single person at all... I guess we're done, then.
hamilton gimbal chronometer circa 1942-- what is it worth? so i was digging through a closet and i found a hamilton ( lancaster PA) gimbal chronometer (either a model 21 or 22, i'm not sure), which belonged to my grandfather. it's from 1942 and is marked "MTD. WATCH/BUREAU OF SHIPS/ U.S. NAVY/N4472-1942" in my opinion it is in good to fair condition. it is currently not running, but i would like to get it fixed. it is not in its original wooden box, but in a metal shipping container. i'm just curious as to what it is worth and about how much & where can i get it fixed? if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.
i need help with a geometry question, it involves dimensions? so heres what i have Alan Arf, the famous pet sculptor, has been commissioned to carve a large marble dog biscuit. to make the preliminary model of his work, alan started with a 1 by 1 by 2.5 foot wooden block. that turned out to be just the right starting shape, so he wants to start the real sculpture with a block of marble that is proportional to the wooden block. he wants the marble block to be as large as possible. however, it has to be shipped by truck, and the maximum allowable shipping weight is 60,000 pounds. assuming that the marble weighs 200 lbs. per cubic foot, what are the dimensions of the largest marble block he can get

Could this be worth any money? I have a wooden model of the 1858 ship USS Hartford...it was my Grandpa's, it is very old (I don't know the exact date), but it is also it fairly bad shape. Can things like this be worth anything, or is it just a wooden model of a ship?
Was Collins submarine project for real ? Look at this http://www.defence.gov.au/ news/NAVYNEWS/EDITIONS/ 2000/07_10_00/story20.htm <<The SCTT (submarine tactics trainer) was turned off on April 27 after years of faithful service (commission in 1989). It had provided high quality training for the RAN's submarine service. Deputy Director Submarine Warfare Systems Centre, LCDR Sandy Powell, hosted the event with the guest of honour RADM Ian MacDougall (Rtd) who commissioned the SCTT3 in 1989. The event was also attended by COMAUSNAVSUBGRP, CAPT R. A. Shalders, the CO of HMAS WATSON, CMDR, D. Street, and former SWSC directors CDRE T.A.A. Roach, CMDR R.R.H. Fayle and CMDR D.F. Webb. As a final tribute to the many years that the SCTT had been used for training RADM MacDougall, LCDR Powell and the previous SWSC directors conducted the "Last Attack" before RADM MacDougall pulled the switch and the SCTT was finally turned off. The SCTT was first established at WATSON in the Tactical Training Building on July 21 1975 to support the training of officers and ship's companies of the Oberon class submarines of the Australian Submarine Squadron. The first OIC was CMDR Ian MacDougall. The first SCTT used carved wooden models to simulate targets and other vessels. In 1980 the SWSC was set up in Building 43 in WATSON with a new SCTT (Mk 2) using the new computer capability to generate visuals for attacks. SCTT Mk 3 arrived with the new purpose built SWSC at WATSON in 1989. The various SCTTs have provided sterling service to the RAN. SCTT 3 has provided more than 33,570 hours of training since commissioning, providing enough trained personnel to create 80 submarine attack teams. But times have changed and with the introduction of the Collins class submarines the SCTT has fulfilled its mission. However, it will continue to serve even in retirement, as parts of it are being donated to various museums where it will be available to the Australian public.>> Surely you jest. Surely this was interoperable with Collins. Surely this system was still being used by projects associated with Collins. Did this happen all the time on Collins project - someone pulls the rug from under other teams. This nonsense couldn't happen without the blessing, or instigation, of someone fairly senior.
